Elon Musk's X asks judge to penalize researchers tracking hate speech on platform

Attorneys for X Corp. and a research organization that studies online hate speech traded arguments in court Thursday after the social media platform sued the non-profit Center for Countering Digital Hate for documenting the increase in hate speech on the site since it was purchased by Elon Musk. X, formerly known as Twitter, alleges the center's researchers violated the site's terms of service by improperly compiling public tweets, and that its subsequent reports on the rise of hate speech cost X millions when advertisers fled. VERIFICATION SCAMS HITTING ELON MUSK’S X AFTER CHANGING FORMER TWITTER CHECK MARKS U.S. District Court Judge Charles Breyer appeared skeptical during oral arguments Thursday in San Francisco , questioning X's attorney how the center violated any platform rules simply by reporting on posts that were already publicly available. Denver scaling back migrant services, closing 4 shelters in effort to reduce budget, save millions

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced Wednesday that the city is scaling back migrant services and will consolidate shelters with the goal of saving the city millions of dollars. During a press conference, Johnston said over the next month, one shelter will close each week, with the closures expected to reduce the current budget deficit by nearly $60 million and reallocate those funds back into city services. However, Johnston warned that the closure plan could change if the city sees massive surges of arrivals and again has to increase its shelter space and migrant services. Johnston added that with shelters closing, no one will be kicked out, they will simply be moved to another shelter, FOX 31 reported. DENVER CUTTING SOME CITY EMPLOYEES’ HOURS DOWN TO ZERO IN ORDER TO SUPPORT MIGRANTS "We’re putting in place now the infrastructure to be able to manage what we would need if that [another surge] happens. Our plan is to try to close the shelters and keep them closed and mov...

Bryan Kohberger case: Idaho court pushes making decision on potential change of venue, trial date

No decision was made to set a trial date for University of Idaho student murders suspect Bryan Kohberger on Wednesday, but a hearing will be held in May to determine whether to move the proceedings elsewhere. Kohberger returned to court as Judge John Judge heard arguments for trial scheduling and the defense's request for a change of venue. Judge set a May 14 hearing to decide on a potential change of venue. Defense attorneys have argued that the massive publicity surrounding the case could impact potential jurors. He said he did want to move the trial to another county, but that he'll do what's necessary.  Prosecutors said the publicity is everywhere, and the main issues is how the media coverage affects the jurors. "I'm listening carefully to both sides, and it's a complicated case," Judge said. "It's a death penalty case." James Comer Is Now Throwing Chuck Grassley Under The Bus As Biden Impeachment Implodes

Image
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer is now throwing Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) under the bus as Biden impeachment crumbles. Comer responded when asked Larry Kudlow if it was true that the impeachment investigation is over: That’s not true. Smirnov was a tip that we received from Chuck Grassley. We investigated the tip, but we couldn’t determine whether or not the tip was accurate because we didn’t know who the informant was. All we, Jim Jordan and I, knew about the informant was what Christopher Wray told us, that he was one of the highest paid, most trusted informants in the entire Bureau and that he had worked for the Bureau for over 10 years. Most of the people that were involved. In that allegation, we’re in Ukraine. Well, I can’t go to Ukraine. I can’t send my staff. We talked about this on this many times. Video: Comer claims on Fox Business that “I can’t go to Ukraine,” even though members of Congress have routinely been going there even since Russia’s full-scale ...

The plate unveiled Monday features a tall green pine — the state tree — and the North Star, icons featured on the state's first official flag in 1901. Maine residents will vote in November on whether to adopt a similar design for a new state flag. KANSAS SCRAPS 'UGLY AS SIN' LICENSE PLATE REDESIGN REBUKED BY PUBLIC Many plates featuring the chickadee, a design introduced in 1999, are now peeling and delaminating, and in need of replacement. West Virginia prisoner enters plea in 79-year-old cellmate's killing

A West Virginia inmate accused of killing his cellmate during an attack at Southern Regional Jail has entered a plea agreement. WEST VIRGINIA AUTHORITIES BUST CRIME RING DELIVERING DRUGS BY DRONE INTO FEDERAL PRISON Lucas Matthew Wagnar, 29, entered a Kennedy plea on Wednesday to second-degree murder in the 2022 death of Douglas Alan Cunningham, 79, The Register-Herald reported. A Kennedy plea means the defendant does not admit guilt but agrees that prosecutors have enough evidence for a conviction . He was sentenced to 30 years in prison per the agreement. Raleigh County Prosecuting Attorney Ben Hatfield said he agreed to allow Wagnar to plead to a lesser charge partly because the state medical examiner’s report labeled the manner of death a homicide but stated the cause was a combination of coronary artery disease and the "stress of the acute injuries" suffered in the attack. The 30-year sentence will run consecutively to Wagnar's current one-to-five-year sentence...

US regulators grant Native American tribes authority to block unwanted hydopower projects

Federal regulators have granted Native American tribes more power to block hydropower projects on their land after a flurry of applications were filed to expand renewable energy in the water-scarce U.S. Southwest . Previously, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted developers approval to move ahead with planning even if tribes objected. That practice came to an end last week. Now, a new commission policy allows tribes to quickly veto proposals, forcing businesses to cooperate if they want the federal government to grant them exclusive rights to their hydropower projects. "This is the acknowledgement and respect of tribal sovereignty, which is critical," said George Hardeen, spokesperson for the Navajo Nation’s president’s office. MAJOR US POWER SOURCE FACING EXTINCTION THANKS TO RED TAPE, SPARKING CALLS FOR REFORM The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently rejected seven proposals for projects on the Navajo Nation, which stretches 27,000 square miles acr...

Pittsburgh bridge collapse caused by years of neglect and oversight failures, investigators say

The city of Pittsburgh did not adequately maintain or repair a bridge and failed to act on inspection reports, leading to the corrosion of the structure's steel legs and its collapse into a ravine, federal investigators said Wednesday. The city-owned Forbes Avenue bridge fell down on Jan. 28, 2022, plunging a bus and four cars about 100 feet into the Fern Hollow Creek. Another vehicle drove off the east bridge abutment and landed on its roof. There were injuries but no one died. After investigators presented their findings, three members of the National Transportation Safety Board agreed that poor inspections and insufficient oversight were among the probable causes of the collapse. PITTSBURGH BRIDGE COLLAPSE SPARKS CALLS TO EXAMINE MORE THAN 10K SIMILAR BRIDGES "The Fern Hollow Bridge collapse should never have happened," NTSB chair Jennifer L.
