An Iowa man serving life in prison for the stabbing death of an 18-year-old woman in 1979 has lost an appeal to overturn his conviction. The Iowa Supreme Court on Friday rejected 69-year-old Jerry Burns' argument that law enforcement officers violated his right to privacy while investigating the death of Michelle Martinko in Cedar Rapids. The nine service members who died in a crash involving two U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopters ranged in age from 23 to 36 and were from seven states, the military said Friday, as it released the identities of the soldiers and an investigative team continued its probe of the accident. 3rd inmate pleads guilty to second-degree murder in prison slaying

An inmate at a federal detention center in southern Michigan has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the slaying of a fellow prisoner convicted of leading a child pornography ring. Alex Castro's plea came Thursday in federal court in Detroit, the U.S. Attorney's office said. Castro, 42, is accused of repeatedly stabbing Christian Maire on Jan. 2, 2019, at the Milan Correctional Institution. He faces up to life in prison when sentenced July 28. Castro, of Fontana, California, already is serving a 42-year sentence for a 2017 federal drug conviction. Two other inmates, Jason Dale Kechego and Adam Taylor Wright, are accused of kicking and stomping Maire in the head before he was thrown down a flight of stairs. Maire was stabbed 28 times. Inmates at a jail in Georgia were able to enjoy a steak dinner in their cell after allegedly paying someone to bring the food to them. Investigators with the Fulton County Sheriff's Office released a video showing smiling inmates chatting about their meal from a restaurant, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. The inmates were also seen drinking orange Fanta. An officer likely brought the food into the Fulton County Jail after receiving payments from the inmates, the sheriff's office said. U.S. authorities on Thursday said they arrested a Washington state man who made more than 20 "swatting" calls around the country and in Canada, prompting real emergency responses to his fake reports of bombs, shootings or other threats. Ashton Connor Garcia, 20, of Bremerton, used voice-over-internet technology to conceal his identity as he placed the calls last year — and he treated them as entertainment, broadcasting them on the social media platform Discord, federal prosecutors said. Philadelphia woman shot by landlord-tenant officer during eviction notice dispute

A Philadelphia woman is recovering in a hospital after she was shot during a confrontation over an eviction notice on Wednesday. The woman was identified as Angel Davis by her husband Gabriel Plummer. She was being served an eviction notice by a landlord-tenant officer when a confrontation began between them. Plummer said he was sleeping when the commotion began. After waking up, he claims he saw the landlord-tenant officer shouting and raising his weapon. Davis, 35, was shot in the head once and transported to a local hospital in critical condition. The officer remained at the scene and gave his weapon to authorities. An inmate in Florida is facing new charges for allegedly planning the murder of her family after she was put in prison for threatening to kill her co-workers, officials said. Osceola County Sheriff Marco Lopez said Tureygua Inaru, 29, allegedly told two fellow inmates at the Osceola County Department of Corrections in Kissimmee, Florida, that her family was "very wealthy" and that she would pay them $50,000 per death of her family members, WESH reported. Philadelphia dog fights for her life after being shot, left for dead

A Philadelphia dog was shot several times on Monday and left for dead before a Good Samaritan found her. The shooting took place in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia. A shark bit a 67-year-old man in the leg over the weekend as he was kite surging off the beaches of Key West, Florida, officials say.  Police were called to Garrison Bight Marina shortly before 2 p.m. City fire-rescue paramedics were applying a tourniquet to the leg of the victim, identified as Kevin Carlton Scott, a resident of Key West.  The man’s wife, 63-year-old Laurie Scott, told first responders her husband was kiteboarding around six miles offshore in Blue Fish Channel when the shark attacked him. A Massachusetts man was indicted Tuesday on murder charges for driving an SUV through an Apple Store's plate glass storefront window in November, killing one person and seriously injuring 22 others. Bradley Rein, 53, was indicted by a Plymouth County grand jury on one count of second-degree murder and one count of motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation for the killing of Kevin Bradley, 65, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said in a statement released on Tuesday. A Brandon, Florida, man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly possessing hundreds of videos and images of child pornography on his cell phone and computer devices. A student pilot was trying to land a small plane at a central Florida airport when it collided with another small plane, sending both aircraft crashing into a lake and killing four people, a preliminary report released Tuesday said. A Piper J-3 Cub seaplane and a Piper PA-28 Cherokee fixed-wing plane were both conducting instructional flights when they collided March 7 over Lake Hartridge near Winter Haven Regional Airport, a National Transportation Safety Board report said. New investigation accounts for remains of US airman whose plane was shot down in Germany

The remains of a U.S. airman whose plane was shot down over Germany during World War II have been accounted for, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced Monday. U.S. Army Air Forces Staff Sgt. Edgar L. Mills, 25, of Tampa, Florida, was shot down July 18, 1944, during a bombing raid on enemy aircraft and air defense installations around Memmingen, Germany, the agency said in a news release. The pilot of the B-17G ordered the crew to bail out. Six crew members parachuted to safety, while five others, including Mills, were believed to have remained on board, the news release said. Mills' body was not recovered at the time, and Germany never reported him as a prisoner of war , the agency said. A Racine man was sentenced to 10 years in prison Monday for the 1986 killing of a young woman whose body was found in a swamp at a Green Bay nature area. Lou A. Griffin, 67, pleaded no contest Jan. 27 in Brown County Circuit Court to a charge of homicide by reckless conduct, and a judge found him guilty. Griffin originally was charged in October 2020 with first-degree intentional homicide in Lisa Holstead’s killing . Her body was found in August 1986. A van crashed into a house in northern Maine, and both the motorist and an occupant of the home died, police said. Both people were pronounced dead at the scene Saturday evening after first responders were told that a vehicle spun out of control on a curve and crashed into the home. More than 30 animals seized from Tennessee breeding mill for animal cruelty

Tennessee law enforcement seized 34 animals from a breeding mill where the animals were living in inhumane conditions. Animal Rescue Corps said it assisted law enforcement in rescuing around 25 dogs, seven cats and two chinchillas from the backyard breeding operation in Macon County on Thursday.  The dogs were found in cages and in filthy conditions. Many of the large dogs were living in small cages where they were unable to stand or turn around. Pennsylvania chocolate factory explosion kills seven after two more bodies found

More bodies have been found as emergency crews continue to survey the site of the R.M. chocolate factory in Berks County, Pennsylvania, bringing the number of fatalities from Friday evening’s explosion to seven. West Reading Mayor Samantha Kaag released a statement Sunday that said two more bodies were located and that all victims have been discovered. Authorities are withholding their names at this time, she said. "Tonight we were able to announce that all seven presumptive missing have been found — please understand that this is still a devastating loss," she wrote. "But we are truly grateful to bring closure to the families involved in the upcoming days." Florida plastic surgeon arrested for murder of missing attorney: police

A Florida plastic surgeon was arrested over the weekend for allegedly murdering an attorney who represented the suspect's former employer in a lawsuit, the Largo Police Department announced.  Dr. Tomasz Roman Kosowski, 44, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Steven Cozzi, who disappeared from his law office on Tuesday.  Police were called to the scene and found that he had left behind his wallet, car keys, and cell phone, but was never seen physically exiting the building. A "strong chemical odor" was detected in the men's bathroom, where investigators found a significant amount of blood after a forensic analysis.  Detectives keyed in on Kosowski as their suspect while looking for a suspicious person who was seen at the office at the same time as Cozzi's disappearance. Satellite images show a train of sargassum seaweed stretching from the west coast of Africa to Florida , stretching as far as 5,000 miles. With a width of nearly twice that of the U.S., the seaweed is expected to move toward Florida and the Caribbean, ultimately piling up along some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
