A Memphis Police Department officer is temporarily off-duty pending the investigation of her DUI arrest, authorities said. Verlean Washington, 28, was charged with driving under the influence, disregarding a red light and failure to exercise due care, according to FOX 13 Memphis. She was also charged with violation of financial law and reckless driving. "Officer Washington is relieved of duty pending the outcome of this investigation," a Memphis Police Department spokesperson said to Fox News Digital. The Memphis Police Department announced that their officers shot and detained the gunman who attempted to enter a Jewish school on Monday afternoon. Police received a report that an armed male fired his gun outside of Margolin Hebrew Academy at around 12:20 p.m. The suspect left the scene after failing to get inside. "Thankfully, that school had a great safety procedure and process in place and avoided anyone being harmed or injured at that scene," Memphis Police Assistant Chief Don Crowe said at a presser. No one was injured at the scene. Although the suspect has not been publicly identified by police, Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen announced that the gunman was a former student. A Houston-area woman spent several days crawling in and out of storm drains trying to rescue a group of abandoned puppies. The West Virginia University Board of Governors gave President E. Gordon Gee a one-year contract extension Monday amid a budget shortfall, falling enrollment and plans to cut some academic offerings. Gee, 79, was given an extension through June 2025 during the board's special meeting in Morgantown. His contract was set to expire next year. The Uber driver behind the wheel during the first reported fatal collision involving a fully autonomous vehicle pleaded guilty to endangerment on Friday, and was sentenced to three years of supervised probation.  In March of 2018, Elaine Herzberg was killed while walking her bike outside the lines of a crosswalk in suburban Phoenix.  Driver Rafaela Vasquez, 49, was streaming a show on her phone and not watching the road at the moment of the fatal accident, authorities said. Video released by the Tempe Police Department from inside the Vasquez's Volvo XC90 SUV shows her looking down at the moment of the crash, during which the vehicle was moving at 40 miles per hour.   She told police that Herzberg "came out of nowhere" on the dimly lit street in Tempe. A small plane crash-landed in front of a crowd on a beach over the weekend in New Hampshire, with a bystander capturing the whole thing on video. At least two tribal nations are expected to open Minnesota’s first recreational marijuana dispensaries in August as recreational marijuana becomes legal to possess and grow in the state on Tuesday. Following a council vote on Friday, the White Earth Nation in northwestern Minnesota legalized recreational cannabis and will begin selling it sometime in the first half of August, Minnesota Public Radio reported. Both tribal members and non-tribal adults 21 years and older would be able to purchase from the nation’s dispensary. A Los Angeles couple filed a lawsuit against Uber Technologies Inc., after they claim a driver for the company of stabbed them during a ride-share service in 2022. Lilit Hakobyan and Khachatur Aspoyan, who filed the lawsuit, said they had ordered a ride on Sept. 25, 2022, and, once inside the vehicle, Hakobyan grew nauseous and vomitted. The driver then grew irate, refused to take them to their destination, and stabbed them both multiple times, the married couple claimed. The couple alleges assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence and negligent hiring, retention, supervision and training. They are seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages, according to City News Service. An eight-year-old girl was camping with her family at Olympic National Park in Port Angeles, Washington , over the weekend when she was attacked by a cougar, officials said. The National Park Service said the attack happened at Lake Angeles about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. The cougar fled the area after the girl's mother screamed at it, FOX Seattle reported. Park staff quickly responded to the area and treated the girl for minor injuries. She was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, the service said. The area was also temporarily closed to the public. "Due to the extreme nature of this incident, we are closing the Lake Angeles area and several trails in the vicinity," Olympic National Park Wildlife Biologist Tom Kay said in the release. At least eight dogs died from heat-related injuries after an AC unit that was being used to keep them cool failed during a 2-hour traffic delay.  The dogs that died were among 18 shepherds that were being transported to a K-9 training facility from O’Hare Airport to Michigan City, Indiana on Thursday, Lake Station police said.  During the transport, the driver became stuck in a traffic jam and the AC unit failed. The temperature rose inside the vehicle, causing the canines to go into heat-related medical distress.  The driver wasn’t aware at first of the AC unit failure because the cargo area was separated. A mob of people beat a security guard to death outside a Hollywood nightclub early Sunday morning, according to reports.  The violence broke out around 2 a.m. outside the Dragonfly Hollywood at 6510 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Police told Fox 11.   The circumstances leading up to the assault – including whether or not it was gang-related – remain unclear. A Colorado police officer who placed a woman in handcuffs in a patrol car parked on train tracks before the vehicle was hit by a freight train was found guilty of reckless endangerment and assault but acquitted of a third charge of criminal attempt to commit manslaughter. Jordan Steinke, who had worked with the Fort Lupton Police Department, was the first of two officers to face trial over the Sept. 16, 2022, crash that seriously injured 21-year-old Yareni Rios-Gonzalez. There was no jury in Steinke's trial, which started Monday, as the judge listened to the evidence and issued the verdict on Friday. "There's no reasonable doubt that placing a handcuffed person in the back of a patrol car, parked on railroad tracks, creates a substantial and unjustifiable risk of harm by the train," Judge Timothy Kerns said. A New Hampshire woman and her child were abducted Thursday while "serving in our community ministry," near Haiti’s capital, a faith based organization said. The news comes the day the U.S. told American citizens to leave Haiti immediately due to high gang violence and kidnappings. Alix Dorsainvil and her child were kidnapped Thursday morning near Port-Au-Prince, according to the organization. El Roi Haiti. Police in Hoover, Alabam a still don't know Carlee Russell's whereabouts during the 49 hours she was missing in mid-July. Russell, 24, was charged Friday with misdemeanor false reporting of an incident and false reporting to law enforcement after she dialed 911 on July 13 at around 9:34 p.m. to report that there was a toddler on the side of Interstate 459 in diapers. When police arrived, Russell was nowhere to be seen. She returned home on July 15 at around 10:45 p.m. near where police say she was seen walking along the sidewalk beforehand. A Tennessee man who plotted with his high school sweetheart to kill her husband amid their seven-month-long affair that involved her lying about being abused was sentenced to 62 years in prison this week.  Darrin Lopez shot American Airlines executive Jamie Faith to death in October 2020 while he was on a walk in his Dallas, Texas-area neighborhood with his wife Jennifer Faith who, unbeknownst to her husband, was involved with Lopez at the time.  Jennifer Faith had, in fact, encouraged Lopez to kill her husband in an elaborate scheme, that included her sending him stock photos to support the lie that he was abusing her physically and sexually and creating fake email accounts to pose as worried friends, FOX 4 reported.  She pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire and was sentenced to life in prison in 2021, with a judge calling her "pure evil." Robert Chambers, who became known as the "Preppy Killer" after he strangled a woman in New York City's Central Park in 1986, was released from prison this week on separate drug charges.  Chambers, 56, served 15 years of his 19-year sentence at Shawangunk Correctional Facility for drug and assault charges and was released on Tuesday. He will remain on supervised release until 2028.  He was arrested in 2007 for selling drugs out of his apartment, four years following his release from prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for strangling Jennifer Levin in the park in the summer of 1986 after they left a bar together. An amusement park ride just outside of New York City sent guests spinning for around 10 minutes when it malfunctioned. The ride malfunction happened at Rye Playland in Rye, New York , on July 23 at the park's Magic Express ride, according to ABC 7. According to the report, the ride takes passengers backward in a loop, but at around 8:30, it kept spinning for an extra three to four minutes as workers struggled to shut it down. A New Jersey woman has been charged with posing as a doctor and prescribing medicine, authorities said Thursday.  Maria Macburnie, 62, was charged with practicing medicine by an unlicensed person, forgery, health care claims fraud, and three counts of distribution of a controlled dangerous substance , according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office. Police body camera footage shows the moment a suspected bank robber fell from a ceiling into a trash bin and was caught red-handed. Officers with the Huron Police Department apprehended 27-year-old Tristan Heidl of Huron, Ohio, as he allegedly was making his escape from the ceiling of the bank's drive-thru. A pair of men manage to escape police interception after they were caught red-handed trying to tear away a Bank of America ATM with their pickup truck in Massachusetts, police said.
