New York City to hand out 500 free Apple AirTags to deter car thefts

The government of New York City plans to distribute free Apple AirTags as an attempt to deter car thefts, Mayor Eric Adams said Sunday. Mayor Adams said that a local nonprofit donated 500 AirTags which will be handed out to car owners in the city. Apple AirTags are GPS tracking devices that can be attached to personal belongings to keep track of them.  "The aggravated number of grand larceny autos continues to drive up crime in our city," Adams explained at a presser. "This simple device, this simple AirTag, hidden in a car location that a person is not aware, of is an excellent tracking device," "It’s easy to monitor. Florida law enforcement officials arrested a six-time convicted felon last week, who was allegedly in possession of enough fentanyl to kill 7,000, with his 4-month-old baby in the vehicle. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ricardo Guyton Jr. for armed trafficking of fentanyl, possessing a firearm as a felon and child neglect. The sheriff’s office said detectives with the department’s Opioid Overdose Investigations (OOI) investigated Guyton’s activities for two weeks before he was arrested. Oregon man lights fire in Target toy aisle as diversion while he steals merchandise: Police

Police in Oregon are searching for a man they say lit a fire inside a Target store as a diversion to steal merchandise. In a Facebook post , the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said it received a report of a fire being intentionally set in the toy aisle of a Salem, Oregon Target on April 22. "Deputies learned this was done as a diversion by a suspect who stole merchandise and then fled out the back of the store," the post stated. Roof holding dozens of people collapses near Ohio State University

Ohio authorities say that at least 14 people have been hospitalized after a roof collapsed in Columbus Saturday evening. The collapse happened at a home near the campus of Ohio State University. Columbus Fire Battalion Chief Jeffrey Geitter told FOX 28 Columbus that between 15 and 45 people were on the roof.  The roof was not designed to support that amount of people, the fire chief said. Army releases identities of soldiers killed in Alaska helicopter crash

The Army has released the identities of the three soldiers killed on Thursday in a helicopter crash. Two AH-64 Apache helicopters collided in midair on Thursday near Healy, Alaska and left three soldiers dead and an additional injured. The helicopters were from Fort Wainwright, which is based near Fairbanks. Chief Warrant Officer 3 Christopher Robert Eramo, 39; Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kyle D. McKenna, 28; and Warrant Officer 1 Stewart Duane Wayment, 32, were all killed in the crash. Florida authorities say they have arrested two teenage girls for allegedly writing a shooting threat in a middle school bathroom on Thursday. Lake County Sheriff's Department said two 13-year-old girls were arrested at Tavares Middle School over the incident. A middle school student initially reported the graffiti to the school resource deputy. The writing read: "School Shooting Friday @ 2:00". "EVERYBODY IS DEAD!" the threat added. Massachusetts police find baby girl's remains in recycling facility

Massachusetts recycling facility employees found the remains of an infant girl at their workplace on Thursday, police say.  The baby's remains were found in a trash collection at the Zero Waste Solutions recycling facility in Rochester. Police described the child as a newborn infant. Rochester Police Department officers arrived at the facility after receiving a 911 call about the incident on Thursday. EMS personnel on the scene determined the baby was deceased. Authorities believe the infant was transported to the facility from Martha’s Vineyard. Prosecutors in Florida plan to seek the death penalty in a murder case against a plastic surgeon accused of the "heinous" killing of a lawyer, despite the fact the victim's body hasn’t been found.  Dr. Tomasz Roman Kosowski, 44, killed Steven Cozzi, an attorney who had been representing defendants in a case brought by Kosowski, on March 21 at his Largo, Florida, law office, prosecutors allege. Texas man who was fugitive in Mexico sentenced for 2013 murder of boss

A Texas man and former fugitive was sentenced to 30 years in prison this week after he pleaded guilty to the murder of his former boss.  Gerardo Alvarez, 46, murdered groundskeeping supervisor Todd Fenton, 48, by shooting him several times inside a school district bus barn in October 2013, FOX 4 reported. Texas partnership with Austin police yields major haul of deadly drug, weapons bound for Mexico

Texas state authorities working with Austin police on Thursday seized a cache of deadly drugs and multiple firearms headed for Mexico.  Texas Gov. Greg Abbott attributed the seizure to the partnership between the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Austin Police – a collaboration that drew some protest when it was first announced last month.  Abbott said the discovery came after DPS Special Agents assigned to the Austin Violent Crimes Task Force (AVCTF) observed a drug deal and made a felony arrest. Vermont man stalked woman by secretly placing AirTag behind license plates: Police

A man in Vermont was charged after he allegedly stalked a woman using an Apple AirTag. The Vermont State Police said that Alan Bjerke, 62, allegedly placed an AirTag behind the license plate of a woman's car. Officials say that Bjerke placed the AirTag in an attempt to lawfully take possession of the car because of a debt payment. However, police said that the man didn't have authorization or a warrant to track the woman's location. California convicted serial killer sentenced to second life sentence for Stanford murders

A California judge sentenced convicted serial killer John Arthur Getreu to seven years to life Thursday for killing 21-year-old Stanford Law librarian Leslie Perlov in 1973. Getreu, 79, strangled both Perlov, and 21-year-old Stanford graduate Janet Taylor, daughter of university football coach Chuck Taylor, 13 months apart in 1973 and 1974, respectively, in what became known as "The Stanford Murders." A young black bear that was recently found wandering around Orlando, Florida, neighborhoods was fatally struck by a car, officials said. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officials said they believe the bear was hit between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Thursday. Officials and biologists were montioring the animal's activities after it was first seen near Orlando residences Monday. Philadelphia students hospitalized after drinking drug-laced juice at school

Twelve students in Philadelphia were caught drinking opioid-laced juice Wednesday, prompting the school to lock down temporarily. Authorities said they believe two students at Crossroads Accelerated Academy in West Philadelphia brought in the drug-infused grape juice. The drink, which was laced with an opioid called "wonk," was passed around and consumed by the students, FOX 29 Philadelphia reported . Police in Indiana say that a man stabbed his mother and tried to kill her on Monday. The Brownsburg, Indiana Police Department said that Kyle Braun, 31, allegedly attacked his mother, 59-year-old Susan Early on Monday at around noon. Officers found Early lying in her front yard with multiple stab wounds and a "large kitchen knife protruding from her head," according to police. A surviving roommate of the Moscow, Idaho home where four people were killed in November 2022 has agreed to an interview with suspect Bryan Kohberger's defense counsel, according to a court filing. Kohberger, a former criminology Ph.D. candidate at Washington State University, is accused of entering a home near the University of Idaho campus on Nov. 13 at around 4 a.m. and stabbing four people inside. Five staff members at a suburban Indianapolis school have been charged with neglect or failure to report neglect after a 7-year-old special education student was told to eat his own vomit. It's going to take some "doe" and a few "bucks" to make window repairs to a family's home after an adventurous deer barreled through their Michigan home . The Bay County Sheriff's Office in Michigan posted about the unusual incident, noting that this was not their usual breaking and entering suspect. Police shared that at 4 p.m. on Monday, April 24, a Monitor Township, Michigan family of five heard their front window smash. However, the loud crash was not from a human trespasser-- it was a deer who started dashing through the family's home. The family quickly enlisted the help of law enforcement and called 911. A middle school student in Gwinnett County, Georgia , brought marijuana and an unloaded handgun to school in his backpack on Tuesday, according to school officials. Trickum Middle School principal Ryan Queen sent a letter to parents stating that a staff member suspected the student had marijuana in their backpack, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Authorities are responding to a person who climbed atop the KTLA5 radio tower in Los Angeles, California , sitting precariously on the ledge and holding a "Free Billie Eilish" sign.  According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officers first received a call about the man at about 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25 after a bystander noticed the unidentified man holding a handwritten sign in one hand and an electric guitar in the other.  The man was sitting approximately 30 feet on the narrow ledge of the KTLA5 digital sign holding the sign demanding for the pop singer's release. US Air Force service member found dead in San Antonio home, officials say

A U.S. Air Force service member was found dead in their San Antonio home Monday morning, officials said.  Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas said San Antonio police officers discovered a deceased Air Force service member at an off-base residence just before 10:20 a.m.  The officers had been conducting a wellness check on the individual when they found the remains, JBSA-Lackland said.  Officials are not releasing the individual’s name until after the next of kin has been notified.
