Fox News’ Ashley Soriano rode along with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to see the hard-to-reach areas. The devastation is undeniable and breathtaking. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs bill restricting use of rap lyrics as evidence in criminal cases

California on Friday enacted a new law limiting prosecutors from using rap lyrics as evidence against criminal defendants. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills, including AB 2799, which requires a pre-trial hearing to determine if hip-hop lyrics are relevant to a case. The bill was approved by state lawmakers in August.  "For too long, prosecutors in California have used rap lyrics as a convenient way to inject racial bias and confusion into the criminal justice process," Dina LaPolt, entertainment attorney and co-founder of Songwriters of North America, told Variety in a statement. "This legislation sets up important guardrails that will help courts hold prosecutors accountable and prevent them from criminalizing Black and Brown artistic expression. Thank you, Gov Newsom, for setting the standard. We hope Congress will pass similar legislation, as this is a nationwide problem." NYC Democratic officials release public safety tip sheet that urges merchants not to call police

Two Democratic New York City leaders this week urged small business owners to try to deescalate situations instead of calling the police days before a man stabbed an on-duty EMS worker to death. The public safety tip sheet tweeted by Queens Councilwoman Tiffany Caban and Zohran Kwame Mamdani, a member of the state assembly, urges merchants to dial 311, seek mental health services for people with mental illnesses, and engage in "community mediation" instead of calling authorities. "We’re distributing them to local businesses, so our neighborhood is equipped with better ways of solving problems than simply summoning police every time a challenge arises," Caban tweeted Tuesday.  In addition to calling 311, the poster urges small business owners encountering conflict to use one of the five "Ds" of intervention: Direct, meaning directly intervene by saying no or using "I" and "We" statements, Delegate, Distract, Delay and Document.  NEW...

Las Vegas shooting: '11 Minutes' docuseries details events of deadliest US shooting in history

Paramount Plus has released a four-part documentary series titled "11 Minutes" detailing the events of the deadliest shooting in U.S. history five years after the tragedy left 58 people dead in a single evening. Two additional victims of the October 2017 shooting into a massive crowd of people at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas have died since that day, making officials' total death count 60 people, on top of the some 800 other victims who were injured in the shooting . "As a storyteller, I have often felt disappointed in how that night was shared. It felt like the narrative that was often explored was that of the worst person there and that the story faded fast into the next hard headline," survivor Ashley Hoff, one of the subjects of the docuseries, wrote in a Sept. 13 Facebook post about the series. "As the yearly markers passed, it felt more and more that the world stopped remembering the night 22,000 of us will never forget. I got to thin...

"We are a law and order state, and this is a law and order community," DeSantis said. "So do not think that you're going to take advantage of people who've suffered misery." "Don't even think about looting," he said during another press conference later in the day. Naval sailor acquitted of arson in fire that destroyed USS Bonhomme Richard in San Diego

A military judge on Friday acquitted a sailor of arson in connection with a fire that destroyed a billion-dollar amphibious assault ship. The ruling in favor of Ryan Sawyer Mays, 21, came after a nine-day trial at the Naval Base San Diego over the blaze aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard. "I can say that the past two years have been the hardest two years of my entire life as a young man," he said in a statement outside the courthouse. "I’ve lost time with friends. I’ve lost friends. I’ve lost time with family, and my entire Navy career was ruined. I am looking forward to starting over." Military prosecutors charged Mays with arson and the willful hazarding of a ship. They said he lit cardboard boxes on fire in a lower vehicle storage area of the $1.2 billion ship, which was docked in San Diego and undergoing maintenance at the time. Memphis community leader urges fathers to be present in their children's lives in effort to reduce crime

Sitting in federal prison, Detrick Saulter wondered if he would have ended up there had he grown up with a father. His mother had Saulter when she was 15 and raised him on her own. Still, Saulter kept on a good path. "She did a great job, actually," the Memphis native told Fox News. "I went to college, I went to trade school, I steered away from all the bad stuff that was going on, the drugs and gangs ." But that changed when Saulter lost his job. MEMPHIS DA SAYS SOME FELLOW PROGRESSIVE PROSECUTORS ‘TARNISHED THE BRAND,’ LEARNED LESSONS FROM THEIR MISTAKES "Me not having a father, I didn't have anybody to lean on once I lost my job and nobody to talk to, so I started talking to the guys that I grew up with," Saulter said. "If I would have had somebody that I could to talk to about it, kind of steer me … say, ‘You may have lost the job, but it’s another way, you can g...

Idaho murder suspect Chad Daybell wants trial delayed, severed from 'doomsday cult' wife Lori Vallow's

Chad Daybell, a murder suspect accused with his wife, Lori Vallow, of killing Vallow's two children and collecting their social security benefits in 2019, is asking for his trial to be delayed and separated from his wife's.  The pair at the center of the bizarre murder case involving not only Vallow's two children but both Daybell's and Vallow's deceased ex-spouses were scheduled to appear in court together on Jan. 9 for a joint trial, but now, Daybell is making efforts to sever their cases, according to Tuesday court filings in Fremont County, Idaho . Daybell initially filed a motion to separate his case from his wife's in 2021, which the court denied in March citing three potential sources for prejudice. The murder suspect's lawyers argued that the court's reasoning was an incorrect application of Idaho law. "Mr. Daybell moves to sever his trial from that of his co-defendant based on the change in circumstances over the [10] months since he la...

Authorities in Minnesota said officers seized what could be the largest fentanyl pills bust in the Midwest when they confiscated 108,943 tablets from a suspected dealer.  Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges said the bust stemmed from an Aug. 31 call to investigate a report of financial fraud . "Through some very, very good police work, they ended up getting – this more than likely the largest fentanyl pill seizure in the Midwest," he told reporters. "This is enough fentanyl to kill a fifth of the entire state's population." He said the doses were pressed M-30 pills and intended to appear as oxycodone doses. All in all, police say the total weight of the fentanyl is 24 pounds, Fox Minneapolis reported. Los Angeles pastor John MacArthur publicly rebukes Gavin Newsom for 'diabolical' policies, invoking Jesus

A prominent Christian pastor in Los Angeles issued an open letter Thursday that rebuked Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom for his recent multi-state billboard campaign that promoted abortion by quoting Jesus. Pastor John MacArthur, 83, who serves as senior pastor of Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, also accused the governor of exhibiting a worldview whose "diabolical effects" have effectively trashed the state, leading to "epidemics of crime, homelessness, sexual perversions (like homosexuality and transgenderism), and other malignant expressions of human misery that stem directly from corrupt public policy." Newsom was met with outrage earlier this month from Christians who took offense when his gubernatorial campaign erected billboards in states where abortion is outlawed or restricted, urging women in such states to come to California to abort their babies. Some versions of the billboards advertised California's easily obtainable abortions b...

Naples Mayor, Teresa Heitmann, says the last 48 hours have been very stressful for her community with many residents still without power and the city in devastation. "[The hurricane] was fierce…fierce and fast. And it just came rushing in. The center of the storm was located about 80 miles north of Naples. Eliza Fletcher case: Tennessee hiring forensic analysts after Memphis mom's murder exposes rape kit backlog

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) on Thursday announced efforts to hire 25 new forensic analysts in the wake of a rape kit backlog highlighted by Memphis kindergarten teacher Eliza Fletcher's murder . Cleotha Henderson, the 38-year-old Memphis man charged with kidnapping and killing Fletcher while she was on an early-morning jog earlier this month, was later linked to another previously unsolved abduction and sexual assault from 2021. Officials believe Fletcher's slaying could have been avoided if the first case was processed in a timely manner. "For several years, Tennessee has made historic investments to support the TBI’s mission so that law enforcement can do its job and combat violent crime. As our nation faces rising crime, we are taking this additional step to eliminate bureaucratic hurdles, increase the TBI’s capacity and reduce testing turnaround times as quickly as possible," Lee said in a Thursday statement.  The 25...

Those who have witnessed activity at the border believe the crisis at the border and the fentanyl crisis are correlated. "Yeah, I've never seen anything like this. The numbers, the organization, the movement.
